Checkered Flag Tavern

Our Story

Since 1947, Checkered Flag Tavern has been a true westside staple—one of those rare neighborhood bars that feels familiar the moment you walk through the door. Located in the Stout Field area, it has long been known for its welcoming atmosphere, friendly faces, and food that keeps people coming back.

About ten years ago, current owner Stacey Snead took ownership and completely renovated the building, transforming it into the Checkered Flag Tavern people know today. Stacey grew up working in his parents’ restaurant, so hospitality and hard work are second nature. His hands-on experience in the industry helped shape the bar into a place where quality, consistency, and community come first.

The kitchen is a big reason people love it here. Food is made fresh, portions are generous, and the menu delivers across the board—from classic burgers and rotating specials to fan favorites like the bacon burger and hot honey garlic wings. The tavern isn’t afraid to try new things, and the constantly changing specials keep regulars excited to come back and see what’s next.

Just as important as the food is the vibe. The rustic, lived-in charm makes it an easy place to settle in, whether you’re grabbing dinner with family, meeting friends for drinks, or staying late for live music. The staff plays a huge role in that experience—bartenders and servers are known for being attentive, welcoming, and genuinely invested in making sure everyone feels taken care of, even on the busiest nights.

Music has always been part of the fabric here. From local acts to traveling bands you won’t see anywhere else in Indianapolis, live music adds to the energy and keeps the place buzzing. Inside, you’ll find pool tables, dart leagues, and a lively 21+ atmosphere. Outside, a spacious patio makes it a go-to spot during warm summer nights. With racing memorabilia throughout the space, the Checkered Flag proudly nods to Indianapolis motorsports culture. During big race weekends, it’s not uncommon to see familiar faces from the track stopping in.
